Notice comfortable behavior
Loose movement and voluntary engagement often indicate greater comfort.
- Soft face and normal breathing
- Curved, relaxed posture
- Ability to eat, explore, rest, or disengage
Recognize early stress
Small signals are a chance to reduce pressure before behavior escalates.
- Turning away, hiding, freezing, or pacing
- Lip licking, yawning, flattened ears, or tucked posture
- Sudden scratching, sniffing, or refusal of food
Create distance safely
Do not punish warning signals; they communicate discomfort.
- Stop approaching or handling
- Give a clear exit route
- Separate with barriers instead of reaching into conflict
Practical checklist
- Whole body observed
- Context considered
- Choice and distance provided
- Triggers recorded
- Pain ruled out when behavior changes
